AIR FILTER MEDIA FOR OILY MIST COOLANT

I operate out of a small garage and don't have room for a proper enclosure.

So I don't get to use flood coolant.

Instead, I've always used mist and I'm generous with my application.

I've tried various lubricants, oils, etc and eventually settled on 0w-16 motor oil. It's thin enough to be pushed through the mister and provides a nice surface finish and increased tool life. Works on aluminum, too. It also prevents rust on all the things.

The only problem is the oily fog that permeates everything.

Basically if I'm doing a job of any real length, I open the garage door and turn the fan on.

I noticed before too long that important electrical stuff was getting covered in a filthy grime. Anything with a fan was getting caked.

The inlet to my expensive 240v UPS was caked, as was the fan.

The Tormach electrical cabinet, the same. Even the spindle motor.

So I bought some air filter media from McMaster and tried it out.

Works great.

I have media shoved into the fan cover on the UPS, in the fan cover on the electrical cabinet and then hot glued to the very top of the spindle.

These photos show the filth after 18 months. I am going to go down to a filter change once per year.

This shows the filth accumulated after 18 months on the spindle. Before and after.

Top left is spindle, top right is what I shove into my UPS fan cover and bottom is what goes under the fan cover at the top of the electrical cabinet.
